This course builds on the foundational theory of our Basic Barista Course, using filter coffee as a medium. While learning how to brew a great filter coffee, we examine coffee’s unique varietals and processing styles and how they’re used in the many growing regions around the world (and even taste what some of these are like!). 

Filter coffee tends to be the go-to drink for baristas and aficionado's for a good reason. All brew methods can seem to have endless variables, but filter coffee is more forgiving when compared to espresso and certainly cheaper to set up. The ease of filter coffee allows you to experience the delights of different coffee styles, taste the unique flavours of different growing regions and do it without the hassle. What makes this even more attractive to the average coffee lover is how cheap a home set up can be! This allows you to potentially spend a bit more on coffee and taste what us in the industry consider “true” specialty coffee, right from home.

We will equip you with the technical skills needed to brew filter coffee, and the theory behind developing a good coffee recipe

The Filter Course is perfect for the home coffee enthusiast and professional baristas alike.

Outline:

Explanation of the important factors that influence a coffee’s unique flavour

Introduction to the equipment needed to brew filter coffees

Analysing a recipe: dose & yield ratio, grind size and contact time

Immersion vs percolator style brew methods

The main variables that influence your coffee’s extraction

Manipulating these variables to achieve a better brew

Selecting your coffee and your brewing methods to match your taste

Sampling various styles and grades of coffee

All classes are limited to four participants & you will receive a Certificate of Achievement at the completion of the class.

Additional Needs:

We will happily cater for vegans & milk-based allergies. Please leave a comment when you book your course if you require almond or soy milk & feel welcome to bring your own preferred milk substitute.

International students - our courses are performed in English. We can make arrangements if you need to bring an interpreter with you. Please let us know how we can assist you.

ONA Coffee Trainers:

The ONA Coffee Training team is headed by Hugh Kelly, Australian Barista Champion 2016 & 2017. You are being trained by the best baristas in the business, who are under the guidance of our Director & World Barista Champion 2015, Sasa Sestic & influence of World Brewer's Cup Runner Up 2017, Sam Corra (ONA Coffee's Head Roaster.)

Venue:

All ONA Coffee Barista Courses are held at our new Barista Training Facility at ONA Coffee HQ at 68 Wollongong Street in Fyshwick ACT. Please arrive five minutes prior to your scheduled class time. On weekdays, make your way to the end of the ONA Coffee driveway & go through the wooden barn doors, please make yourself comfortable on the lounge in the foyer. For weekend courses, take a seat on the bench outside the warehouse roller doors & your trainer will collect you at the scheduled class time. Thank you!!

Retail Shop:

After the class, there will be an opportunity to purchase the items you have been using in the class - at a special discounted price - including a range of milk jugs, scales, tampers, books, The Coffee Man DVD, ONA Coffee Distribution tools & of course, the coffee!! EFTPOS facilities are available & we can issue you with a tax invoice.

CANCELLATION/ REFUND & TRANSFER POLICY:

Please note, we require at least 48 hours notice (before the commencement of your scheduled course) to cancel your booking for a full refund, or transfer you to another course.
If you cancel or request a transfer within 24-48 hours prior to the commencement time of your course, there is a $25 cancellation or transfer fee.
We cannot refund or transfer your booking within 24 hours of the course, you will lose your $140 course fee.

Appropriate for

The filter course is perfect for those who have started working as a part-time barista, or a home barista. We happily train young teenagers & people who have never touched a coffee machine before.

Thank you for booking an ONA Coffee Barista Course or Gift Certificate.

If you find you are not available to attend the course you have booked, you are welcome to transfer to a different time and/ or date, pending availability. The transfer must be done at least 48 hours, prior to the course commencing. We can offer a refund (less booking fee) when more than 48 hours notice is provided & a refund is requested. The refund will go back onto the card or payment method used, to book the course.

If you transfer or cancel 24-48 hours, prior to the course commencing, there will be a $25 transfer or cancellation fee.

If you find you are not available to attend the course you have booked and give us less than 24 hours notice, you no longer have the option to transfer to another course and will lose your full course fee.

All courses and gift certificates must be used within six months after the purchase date.

Please appreciate that ONA Coffee Barista Courses are very popular and booked 4-6 weeks in advance, if you transfer from a course, we need to fill your place. Thank you.
